Race to Dubai 2011
The Race to Dubai 2011 promised to be bigger and better than ever before, with an expanded 52-tournament schedule and new events such as the Volvo Golf Champions in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Sicilian Open in Sicily and the Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia. Luke Donald dominated the European Tour to finish as a clear winner in a blistering year.
The Englishman won the WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship, the BMW PGA Championship and the Barclays Scottish Open, but it was his consistency which really set him apart and he was rarely out of the top ten at any event.
He went into the season-ending Dubai World Championship firmly in pole position and pulled further clear of nearest rival Rory McIlroy as he sealed another top-three finish, behind Alvaro Quiros of Spain and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie. The result also put Donald into the history books as it capped a memorable year when he had also finished top of the US PGA Tour money list, becoming the first player to win both of the main tours.
McIlroy, US Open champion in June, finished second in the overall Race to Dubai, while former winners Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood also featured in the top five.
