Race to Dubai 2010
After the outstanding success of the first Race to Dubai competition in 2009, professional golfers and enthusiasts alike were extremely keen to see how things would unfold in the Race to Dubai 2010. Fortunately, the scheduling of the Race to Dubai meant that we didn’t have to wait long between competitions with just over two weeksbefore the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
Although the Race to Dubai 2009 competition only ended on 22 November 2009, the Race to Dubai 2010 competition got underway with the Alfred Dunhill Championship on 10 December 2009.
Race to Dubai 2010 featured 48 tournaments in 27 destinations, and reached its climax in the Dubai World Championship, which ran from 25 to 28 November 2010. As in the inaugural competition, the bonus prize pool was worth $7.5 million and this was distributed between the top 15 players, with the player ranked 1st picking up the biggest share worth $1.5 million.
Lee Westwood won the Race to Dubai 2009 and he was certainly in the running to repeat his success in 2010, but he ended the competition in third place behind Graeme McDowell and the new champion Martin Kaymer, who had finished third in 2009. McDowell could have thwarted Kaymer’s attempt at the title by finishing in the top three on the Dubai World Championship leaderboard, but that didn’t happen and so Kaymer became the second Race to Dubai champion in history – not bad for someone who had only turned professional in 2005!
The top 15 players who shared the Race to Dubai bonus pool (and the prize money won by each during the race as a whole) were as follows:
